Are you confused when it comes to dieting?
Do you try diet after diet with little or no progress?
Are you frustrated with your lack of results?
It’s no secret that so many people struggle when it comes to nutrition and eating healthy. There is so much information out there that it can leave you feeling confused and overwhelmed.
Then with the amount of ‘bad’ information around these days, it’s no wonder why so many people aren’t seeing the progress and results they want.
Below are some of the common reasons where you could be going wrong.
1: NOT TAILORING IT TOWARDS YOURSELF
Everyone has a different body, lifestyle, wants, likes, dislikes etc. This is why some diets work for some people and not for others.
You hear from your friend that this type of diet has worked wonders for them. “AMAZING” this is it… you have cracked the code and all this weight is going to fall right off… BUT then it doesn’t work for you! There is no such thing as a one size fits all!
2: A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND AWARENESS
You don’t understand portion control and are unaware of your current eating habits. You need to be in a calorie deficit to lose fat (burn more energy than you take in). Your caloric needs are different to someone else based on factors such as gender, age, weight, activity levels etc.
You are also unaware of all the calories you subconsciously consume (nibbling whilst cooking, that extra mouthful, liquid calories etc). Yes, they all count as well.
3: OVER COMPLICATING IT
Trying to ‘run before you can walk’. This is very common and you see this in lots of different areas. Focus on nailing down the ‘basics’ to nutrition such as portion control, a variety of quality food and eating adequate amounts of protein. Keep thing simple to begin with and be consistent, then you can worry about the ‘finer’ details.
4: BANNING OR RESTRICTING FOOD
You ban or completely eliminate all foods you enjoy (without any valid reason) because they are deemed 'unhealthy'. Some of the only times you want to be completely avoiding certain foods is when you have an allergy, intolerance, you dislike them or they are a ‘trigger food’ (foods you massively overeat).
You also massively restrict in the week and then do the opposite the weekend which takes you out of the calorie deficit. This then leads to bad eating behaviours and a poor relationship with food.
5: YOU DON’T TRACK ANYTHING
I don’t necessarily mean tracking calories as some people find that way too much which is totally understandable. However, you should have a way of measuring your food intake. Without measuring what you put into your body, how can you expect to make changes if it isn’t working? This can be using certain apps like my fitness pal, or something as simple as a written food log. Having a food log won’t only tell you how much you are putting in your body, it will also help you with awareness and understanding your current eating habits and behaviours.
It is so important for you to have an understanding based on nutrition and how to fuel your body correctly in order to reach your goals, this is why every client who comes to see me for personal training will receive a FREE copy of the SOS Fitness nutrition eBook.
